Highlights

About the Complex

Khermen Tsav was formed over millions of years as red mud sediment solidified into massive cliffs. Approximately 200 million years ago, the area was covered by an inner sea, which contributed to the preservation of fossils. The cliffs’ dramatic erosion patterns have created the unique “cracked wall” appearance that resembles ancient masonry. The surrounding landscape includes desert plains and small oases, supporting limited flora and fauna.

Khermen Tsav is part of the Cretaceous Dinosaur Fossil Sites in the Mongolian Gobi, a UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List site. This designation highlights the area's global paleontological importance, with fossil sites dating from the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 71 to 65 million years ago. The region has yielded significant dinosaur fossils, contributing valuable insights into prehistoric life

The End of the World

The American archaeologist Roy Chapman Andrews referred to Khermen Tsav as “The End of the World” due to its remote and rugged location. The cliffs have yielded fossils that date back 200 million years, revealing the area’s prehistoric marine and terrestrial life. This discovery cemented the Gobi Desert’s reputation as one of the richest paleontological regions in the world.
