About the Valley

Yol Valley is a deep and narrow gorge carved in the Züün Saikhan subrange of the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountains. Originally established to conserve birdlife, it is now part of Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park, the largest protected area in the Gobi, stretching 380 km east-west and 80 km north-south.

The park includes three peaks: Baruun Saikhan (Western Beauty), Dund Saikhan (Central Beauty), and Züün Saikhan (Eastern Beauty), with Yol Valley situated in the eastern subrange. Wildlife, glaciers, and endemic plants thrive alongside petrified trees and stunning rock formations.

The History

The name “Yolyn Am” means “The Gorge of the Bearded Vulture”, named for the rare birds that nest at 2,000 meters or higher. The park was first protected in 1965 and expanded in 1993 to include Khongor Sand Dunes, Nemegt, Khermen Tsav, and Zulganai river, combining paleontological, botanical, and geological treasures.
