Bulgan is often called the "Green Gateway" of Mongolia. It experiences higher rainfall than the southern regions, resulting in vibrant grasslands and thick forests of larch and birch. The province is historically significant as the homeland of many famous Mongolian wrestlers and the birthplace of the country’s first cosmonaut, Jügderdemidiin Gürragchaa. It is also the primary producer of Airag (fermented mare's milk), considered the best in the country. Bulgan aimag in northern Mongolia is often celebrated as the Land of the Pioneers, a title that reflects the remarkable number of national heroes, athletes, and artists born here.

Paved Road Access

Unlike many provinces, the road from Ulaanbaatar to Bulgan city is fully paved, making it accessible even for smaller 2WD vehicles.

Timing for Airag

To experience the "Airag season," visit between late July and early September. This is when the fermentation is at its peak and nomadic hospitality is most active.

Variable Weather

Bulgan is greener because it rains more. Always carry a waterproof shell and a dry bag for electronics, especially if camping near the Orkhon River.

Eco-Friendly Hiking

When hiking the volcanoes, stick to established paths to prevent erosion of the delicate volcanic soil and crater rims.
