Overview
Often referred to as the "Second Capital" of Mongolia, Darkhan-Uul Province is a unique blend of Soviet-era planning and traditional Mongolian culture. It is the country's smallest province by area but serves as its most significant industrial and educational center outside of Ulaanbaatar. Darkhan-Uul was established with significant assistance from the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries to relieve the population pressure on Ulaanbaatar. Located in the fertile Kharaa River valley, it bridges the gap between the Khentii and Khangai mountain ranges. Today, it is a clean, organized city known for its "urban nomadism," where high-rise apartments sit just miles away from active nomadic pastures.
