Overview

Known as the "Switzerland of Mongolia," Khuvsgul Province is a land of towering mountains, crystal-clear alpine lakes, and deep taiga forests. It is the northernmost province of Mongolia and serves as the country’s primary hub for nature-based tourism. Khuvsgul Province is dominated by the majestic Sayan Mountains and the massive Lake Khuvsgul, which holds nearly 70% of Mongolia's fresh water. The region is ecologically diverse, transitioning from the Central Asian steppe to the Siberian taiga. It is home to several distinct ethnic groups, most notably the Tsaatan (reindeer herders) and the Darkhad people, and remains a stronghold for authentic Mongolian Shamanism.

Travel Essentials

Best Time to Visit

Summer (June – August): Best for trekking, boating, and visiting the Tsaatan.

Winter (February – March): Specifically for the Khuvsgul Ice Festival, where the lake becomes a playground for horse-sled racing and ice carvings.

Transportation

Air: Daily flights from Ulaanbaatar to Murun (approx. 1.5 hours).

Road: A paved road connects Ulaanbaatar to Murun (670 km), a scenic but long 10–12 hour drive.

Packing List

Rain Gear: Khuvsgul is the most humid region in Mongolia; sudden rain is common.

Sturdy Boots: Essential for the rocky and marshy terrain of the taiga.

Accommodation

Ger camps, Local Hotel and Guesthouses available in main towns; rural stays rely on traditional ger camps or simple lodges.

The Tsaatan live in the deep taiga (East and West Taiga). In the peak summer months (late June to early August), some families move closer to the lake for tourism, making them easier to visit. However, seeing their true home requires a multi-day horseback trek into the mountains.

Even in July, the water remains very cold (around 10-14°C). While some brave souls take a quick dip, it is generally better suited for boating and kayaking than swimming.

The capital (Murun) and the gateway village (Khatgal) have good 4G/LTE coverage. However, once you enter the National Park or head into the Darkhad Valley, expect to be completely off the grid.
