About the Complex
The park was established in 1965 to protect the lake, the volcanic landscape, and its wildlife. Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake was formed when Khorgo Volcano erupted, blocking the Terkh River and creating a freshwater lake.
The surrounding area is covered by the Khangai Mountains at altitudes up to 3,000 meters, featuring grasslands, volcanic caves, and diverse ecosystems. The volcanic terrain includes unique formations such as the “Yellow Dog’s Hell” cave, a deep ice-filled cavern created by lava flows.
The Legend of Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake
Before the lake existed, the valley was lush grassland with a well providing fresh water. One day, an elderly couple forgot to close the well after fetching water. The overflowing water flooded the valley, forming Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. Locals believe this story explains the lake’s origin and associate it with fertility and abundance.
