Using your cell phone & internet while traveling in Mongolia
Traveling with mobile devices is easier to share your travel story and, more importantly, keep in touch with friends and family back home. Thus maybe you’re asking yourself, “Will I be able to use my cell phone in Mongolia?” or “How will I access the internet in Mongolia?" This article will address your concerns.
Using a cell phone in Mongolia:
Mobile phone signal is quite good in Mongolia, although coverage may be patchy in remotest areas. The main carriers are Mobicom, Skytel, Unitel, and G-Mobile. Mobicom and Unitel operate on GSM (Global System for Mobile communication). G-Mobile and Skytel are both on the CDMA network.
For international tourists who will only be staying in Mongolia for a short period, we recommend you purchase a tourist SIM card. This is definitely the cheapest way to use your phone to access the web and make local calls, and fees for international calls are generally pretty low. If you are traveling on one of our tours, we can help you arrange and activate a prepaid SIM card for you before your arrival at your request. Just let your travel specialist know if you want us to help you with this.
Accessing the Internet While Traveling in Mongolia?
Free Wi-Fi internet is available in all hotels and some restaurants in Ulaanbaatar. Few Ger camps and local hotels offer free WiFi during your countryside trip. But if you already have a local SIM card installed in your cell phone, then you will be able to connect to Mongolia’s 3G mobile network and access the internet on the go. The 3G network covers most areas in Mongolia.
FYI: As of January 2020, the number of Internet users in Mongolia has reached 2.2 million. It means 68% of the total population has access to the internet nationwide. The three primary carriers in Mongolia are Unitel, Mobicom, Skytel, and G-Mobile.
