Highlights

About the Lake

Khar-Us Lake formed in a tectonic depression and has gradually become shallower over centuries due to natural drying and sedimentation. Dense reed beds line its shores, providing ideal habitats for birds and fish. The lake is fed by the Khovd and Buyant rivers from the Mongol Altai Mountains, ensuring a steady flow of freshwater that sustains the surrounding wetlands.

Khar Us Lake has a river called Chono Kharaikh that flows from it. This river leads to Khar Lake, also known as Black Lake, where migratory pelicans live. There is a debate about which lake is deeper in Mongolia: Khar Lake or Khuvsgul Lake. At the southern end of Khar Lake, the water flows into Dorgon Lake, which is a large salty pond. The eastern side of Dorgon Lake has a desert and large dunes.

Local Beliefs

According to local legend, Khar-Us Lake is home to a guardian spirit known as “Khar Usyn Ezen,” who protects the purity of its waters. Fishermen often offer milk or airag before setting sail, seeking the lake spirit’s blessing for a safe and fruitful journey
