Milking a cow

Milking a Cow in Mongolia

Experience a unique and hands-on tradition by milking a cow during your Mongolian adventure. This activity is one of the most common and essential parts of daily life for nomadic families, where fresh milk is used to make local dairy products like yogurt and cheese. The best time to partake in this activity is during the spring and summer months, and the only way to truly experience it is by joining a local nomadic family.

How to Milk a Cow:

  • Get Ready:
  • Sit or kneel beside the cow in a comfortable position. It's important to make sure the cow is calm, and gently petting her can help keep her relaxed.
  • Clean the Udder:
  • Use a damp cloth to carefully clean the cow’s udder. This step ensures hygiene and prepares the cow for milking.
  • Position Your Hands:
  • Place your hands around the teats with a firm yet gentle grip. Your thumb and forefinger should circle the teat.

Milk the Cow:

Gently squeeze from top to bottom in a rhythmic motion. Use your thumb and forefinger to push the milk out, and continue until you’ve collected enough.

Finish Up:

After milking, clean the udder again. Don’t forget to offer the cow a small treat as a token of gratitude for her cooperation!
