Building a Mongolian ger

Building a Mongolian ger

During your trip, enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience building a Mongolian Ger at a camp or with a nomad family. Learn traditional techniques as you help assemble the frame, roof, and felt coverings.

How to Build a Mongolian Ger

  • Building a Mongolian ger is a skill passed down through generations. Here’s how it’s traditionally done:
  • Frame Construction: The process begins with assembling the wooden walls, known as "khana." These are arranged in a circular shape, forming the structure’s base. The walls are then joined with a central support column called the "toono."
  • Roof Assembly: Wooden rafters are attached to the toono, creating the ger’s dome-shaped roof. These rafters are connected in a way that gives the structure stability, allowing it to withstand strong winds.
  • Felt Covering: Once the frame is complete, multiple layers of felt, often made from sheep wool, are draped over the structure. These felt layers provide insulation, keeping the ger warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • Interior Setup: The inside of the ger is carefully arranged. The stove is placed in the center for warmth, and sleeping areas are positioned in specific locations according to cultural traditions. The layout also includes storage spaces and decorative items like rugs and tapestries.

What is a Mongolian Ger?

Maybe you’re wondering, what is a ger? A ger is a round, portable home made from a wooden frame covered with felt, often made from sheep wool. This simple design helps the ger stay warm in winter and cool in summer, making it perfect for Mongolia's harsh climate.

Why Stay in a Ger?

Staying in a ger gives a unique chance to experience Mongolia’s nomadic lifestyle. Mongolians move with their herds up to three times a year, and the ger is built for easy mobility. Staying in a ger camp lets you wake up to beautiful landscapes, enjoy traditional food, and try activities like horseback riding or archery. It’s an authentic way to connect with Mongolia’s history and culture.
