Elsen Tasarkhai is located in Burd soum of Uvurkhangai province and 280km from Ulaanbaatar on the way to Kharkhorin. It can be translated as “sand fracture” and it continues 80 km long, 5 km wide in the South of the Khogno Khan National Park.
Elsen Tasarkhai is the perfect destination for people who do not have time to make a full trip to the Gobi Desert but who do not want to miss out on the chance to see sand dunes.
The main road separates this sand dune into two parts, Mongol Els on the south and Khugnu Tarnyn Els on the north. Elsen Tasarkhai is surrounded by Mount Khugnu Khan on the north and Mount Ikh Mongol on the south.
The widest of the sand dune is 9-10 km2, located in the Ikh Mongol mountain area.
Shrubs such as willow, elm, and dogwood grow on the sand formed by the moisture of River Tarna. It is very unique to see this type of ecosystem, a combination of mountains, forests, steppes, and sand dunes in one location.
Along the way you can see a lot of two-humped Bactrian camels, walk on sand dunes, experience staying in a traditional Mongolian yurt, and relax in beautifully serene nature.
