Uran Uul is an extinct volcano located in Khutag-Undur soum of Bulgan aimag (approx. 600km away from the capital Ulaanbaatar), 80 km west of Bulgan city, near the road to Murun city of Khuvsgul. This mountain was active about 20 million years ago and was first protected in 1965. The Mongolian government had first limited the protected area of Uran Togoo to the North of Uran Uul, then extended it to the South of Uran Uul in 1995.
It is 1686 m high, has a pot on top, the diameter of the crater is 500-600 m wide and 50-60 m deep. At the bottom of the Uran volcano, there is a small lake about 20m wide and 1.5 deep. The water is shrinking every year due to global warming and the recent lack of rainfall.
Another volcano named Tulga, Togoo, and Jalavch Mountains is located 12 km south of Uran Mountain and was erupting during the Quaternary. It is believed that it was last extinct 20-25 thousand years ago.
The Volcano has breeding populations of various birds: grouse, sparrow, owl, falcon, cuckoo, and hoopoe. Deer, argali sheep, roe deer, wild boar, wild goat, marmot, gopher, steppe rabbit live here. Snake is very common.
