Genghis Khan's Statue Complex

Genghis Khan's Statue Complex

The Genghis Khan Statue Complex was established in 2008 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the Mongolian Empire and honor the legacy of Genghis Khan (Chinggis Khaan). It is located 54 kilometers (33.5 miles) from Ulaanbaatar, in an area called Tsonjin Boldog, within the territory of Erdene soum.

The statue, depicting Genghis Khan on horseback, is made of stainless steel, weighing 250 tons and standing 40 meters tall, making it the largest equestrian statue in the world. According to legend, Genghis Khan found a golden whip in this very location. The statue faces east, symbolically pointing toward his birthplace. It stands atop a 10-meter-high base, surrounded by 36 columns representing the 36 Mongolian kings, from Chinggis Khan, the founder of the Mongol Empire, to Ligden Khan, the last king.

Visitors can explore museums, souvenir shops, and restaurants within the complex. An elevator ride takes guests to the horse's head, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

Once fully completed, the Genghis Khan Statue Complex will feature 200 modernized Gers, a golf course, an open-air theater, an artificial lake, and 10,000 newly planted trees.

Legend

In 1177, Genghis Khan, along with his younger brothers Khasar and Belgutei, sought aid from Tooril Khan of the Khereid tribe, a close ally of their late father. As a token of respect, they presented him with a sable robe. On their journey, Genghis Khan discovered a golden whip in the Tsonjin Boldog area. In Mongolian tradition, finding a whip is considered a powerful symbol of good fortune and success.
